Well construction in Athens water company

Introduction

The aim of the project was to increase the total capacity of the water pumping station of MAVROSOUVALA EYDAP from 4200 m3/h to 5400 m3/h, by drilling four new deep water wells in the area. New wells have been drilled in the limestone  carstic rocks of mountain PARNIS using the foam drilling technique with combination with geophysical downhole inclination measurements in order to control and minimize the vertical deviation of the well during drilling.

Water well technical data

New wells have been constructed using two separate drilling groups, in two phases: Exploration drilling (diameter 25 cm) and final drilling (diameter 46 cm).

All wells have been screened with 30 cm diameter well screens. Drilling log was carried out with sampling interval of 1 m and corrected with additional well logging measurements.

The final well development was realized with high pressure compressor and AIRLIFT procedure. Extensive pumping tests with high yield submersible pumps have proved the mean capacity of each water well: 300 m3/h.

Water quality

The water from these wells in the carstic aquifer of mount Parnis has one excellent quality. The TDS has one mean value of 300 mg/l even in the summer period.

Conclusion

The increase of the final pumping rate of the MAVROSOUVALA station of the Water Company of Athens (EYDAP SA) has offered one additional water quantity to the final water consumers of Athens, with the highest quality. The Year water production from these new wells is sufficient to cover one half of Athens needs in water supply at the future Olympic Games in 2004.
